About Trafficking

According to the December 2000 United Nations Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children, which supplements the Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime.

- Trafficking in persons shall mean the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation. Exploitation shall include, at a minimum, the exploitation of the prostitution of others or others or other forms of sexual exploitation, forced labour or services, slavery or practices similar to slavery, servitude or removal of organs.

The Memorandum of Understanding on the Prevention and Suppression of Trafficking in the Nine Northern Provinces (Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Sorn, Payao, Prae, Nan, Lampang and Tak provinces) (2003), identifies Thailand as an origin, gateway and destination country for trafficking in women and children within its territory and without. The MoU also encourages all nine northern provinces to strengthen the assistance and support given to trafficked children and women, with more efficient co- ordinations and systematic referral services.

Children are trafficked from many neighbouring Asian countries to work in the Thai child prostitution industry, many from Myanmar, Laos and China.

The MRICRH supports and advocates for the rights of children and women who are victims of trafficking in the Upper Mekong region.

During the period of one year MRICRH has assisted xx cases of trafficking.

Trafficking victims need specialized care and support to rebuild their lives.
