Sompop receives an award

DEPDC founder Sompop Jantraka will accept the Wallenberg Medal at the University of Michigan on March 13 2008, for his humanitarian efforts in combating human trafficking.

The Wallenberg Lecture was established in 1985 to commemorate University of Michigan alumnus Raoul Wallenberg, who graduated in 1935 and who, as a Swedish diplomat during World War II, engineered the rescue of tens of thousands of Jews from the Nazis in World War IIHungary. The Lecture recognizes outstanding humanitarians whose courage calls to mind Wallenberg's extraordinary values and accomplishments.

The Executive Committee of the Wallenberg Endowment recognizes Sompop Jantraka's work as founder of the Development and Education Programme for Daughters and Communities Centre (DEPDC), which has made a profound difference in the lives of many hundreds of young women at risk of sexual slavery and exploitation. By directing energy to these issues in the wider Mekong region, he continues to carry forward this critically important humanitarian work.

The Wallenberg Medal and Lectureship is now in the seventeenth year. In past years, the medal has been presented to a number of distinguished humanitarians, including Elie Wiesel; His Holiness Tenzin Gyatso, Fourteenth Dalai Lama of Tibet; the Honorable John Lewis, a leading figure in the struggle for civil rights in this country; Kailash Satyarthi, a fearless and tireless advocate for the abolition of child labor in India; Bill Basch, who as a teenager in wartime Budapest helped Wallenberg rescue Jews; and Paul Rusesabagina, who rescued many hundreds of Rwandans during the 1994 genocide. Last year's recipient was Sister Luise Radlmeier, a Dominican nun working in Kenya who provides aid and relief to persons fleeing the civil wars in Sudan.
