Child Voice Radio

Child Voice Radio (CVR) broadcasts to Mae Sai and the surrounding area in order to bring information about DEPDC and the issues it tackles to the local community. Since much of the programming is provided by the children resident at DEPDC, CVR provides a unique opportunity for the children's voice to be heard in the community.

The children help to broadcast in a number of different languages, include Akha, Karen and Shan, while the staff and MYN students provide shows in Burmese, Lao, Vietnamese and Chinese.

“My name is Chan and every Saturday me and Boi speak on the radio in Ahka. It feels good to talk in my own language and know that other people are listening. And we get to play all our favourite songs!”

The variety of languages allows the children, whose heritage ranges from across the Mekong region, the opportunity to express themselves in their own language and also reach out to the different tribes and nationalities in the area. After school and at the weekends the children get to take charge of these shows themselves, choosing the music and the subjects to talk about. During the day there are shows which feature interviews with the children, as well as news and songs specifically targeted at a younger audience.  The children also help out in the evening Easy English show, providing the Thai translations for the foreign volunteers teaching English to the community.

CVR now broadcasts live and archived programming 24 hours a day 7 days a week over the internet.   Tune in here.
